Gastric Balloon

It was designed as an alternative treatment for overweight and obesity due to its mechanism of reducing the capacity of the stomach as it partially occupies the gastric cavity, resulting in an increase in the feeling of satiety.

It is an expandable spherical silicone device that allows its volume to be adjusted according to the patient's needs. This device will be introduced into the stomach via endoscopic means and filled with saline solution and blue ink (methylene blue).

Is recovery painful?

No, the intragastric balloon placement procedure is a non-surgical, non-hospitalized procedure; it is placed (and removed) by endoscopy under anesthetic sedation, so you can fly home the same day and quickly return to your normal activities.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

This procedure is suitable for patients seeking an average weight loss of 20 kg and with a BMI between 27 and 39. It is not recommended for patients who have had previous bariatric surgery, gastritis, reflux and/or gastric ulcer. A medical evaluation is required to always determine the viability of the procedure.

How do you get the ball out?

Removal of the Spatz3 intragastric balloon is quick and simple. Within a quarter of an hour, the balloon is removed the same way it was placed: through an endoscopy procedure while you are under conscious sedation.

Can I eat whatever I want? Are there any dietary restrictions?

For the first few weeks after switching from a liquid to a solid diet, the amount of fibre in your diet will be restricted. Vegetables and fruit can cause bloating, so fibre can be slowly reintroduced over time as tolerated. In general, with the gastric balloon in place, you are likely to experience a decreased appetite. That said, overeating with the balloon in place can cause symptoms such as bloating, belching, nausea, vomiting, heartburn and cramping. Continued overeating may hinder progress and cause side effects such as excessive vomiting and dehydration. However, you will work closely with your healthcare professionals throughout the process; you will discuss your eating habits and nutrition plan with your dietitian or nutritionist and it is always a good idea to consult with them before introducing new foods into your diet. Importance of clinical evaluation

The choice between these two procedures depends on the patient's clinical profile, including their medical history, current weight, weight loss goals, and existing comorbidities such as diabetes or heart disease. *A comprehensive evaluation by a specialized medical team is crucial. This team includes the renowned certified bariatric surgeon, Dr. Jeffry Romero Manzano as well as a nutritionist, psychologist and other health professionals, ensuring that the chosen procedure is safe and effective for the patient.
